Purple Glow premiered at famous cult movies festival FanTasia

the show went nearly sold out, according to the festival organizers, and I
was certainly not expecting this much attendance. Thanks to all of you,
and also to those who specifically wrote me to wish me luck or simply
mention they'd love to be there but cannot come for various reasons.

Astronomers across the world are
watching the sky as a meteor is reported on a collision course with
our planet. When the rock gets to crash on Earth, some campers in
the neighborhood decide to venture in the woods to find that relic
from outer space before the authorities. Problems arise when one of
the pretty ladies touches the alien rock and turn into a monster
that feeds on sex and human flesh.

UPDATED PROGRESS REPORT
will be posted below as soon as filming
evolve. Stay tuned!

July 23rd, 2004
It's a start! We launched tonight the principal photography
session with the filming of studio shots, where a TV newsreporter (Berny
Reichl) gets attacked by his researcher (Kittiesab) while delivering
a breaking news bulletin. Everything went very smooth, we shot the
whole thing in front of a bluescreen to re-create as closely as
possible the effect of a real TV studio.

Today was the first
location filming day, and it was terrific! We had some concerns
about the weather, but finally it turned out OK. We have been
filming some night shots, where astronomers were stargazing and
eventually get to see a meteor falling on the Earth. Lindsay Browne
and Marc Durocher delivered a wonderful and convincing performance.
Filming at night was quite challenging. Of course, no daylight! So
we had to find a way to properly lit the rather large scenery, and
we used powerful 2000 watts spots on tall stands, powered by a
capable generator. Next problem arise: generator was noisy! So we
had to use quite lengthy gauge 8 cables to have the engine far away
from the sets. The very effective miking job by soundman
Jean-Francois Mayer fixed that noise problem, and we were in
business.

We got small casting problem lately, and we are forced to recast
two members of the line up who became unavailable, for personal
reasons. We tried to modify the filming days to accommodate their
schedule, but it was simply impossible, so we are forced to move on
with other cast people. This is how we now welcome Magenta
Baribeau, a cult model from the Montreal scene, who appeared in
numerous magazines and printed advertising, and that has been
featured in a number of independent productions as well. Stunning
Magenta inherits of one of the key role.
Next, we called back one of my
favorite actor as he's been part of both Irish Whisky and
The Night They Returned, Costa. He also inherits of a
very important role, but as he is used to work with us and we are
aware of his capabilities to quickly jump in a role and deliver, we
have no concerns about performance, even though we are getting close
to principal photography shooting dates.

Another step made in the filming of Purple Glow! We've shot an
additional 6 minutes of film, which involved actor Mark Burakoff and
stunning actresses Lindsay Brown and Vicky Coupal.
Many of the crew
members are new to work together, but as we move on with additional
filming sessions, everyone get used to work together, and the setups
get ready rather quickly in a very effective way.
Here we go with a few
more shots taken on the set hereby...

August 28th, 2004
We have now begun principal location photography! We spent the
whole day in the woods with a cast / crew of 12 folks and once
again, everything worked as planned. Gee... this thing is coming
along so nicely! It's almost scary how things line up as they
should, I am not used to that, hehe!
So we had a terrific week end, the
only sad note is that we could not make it on Sunday as we ran into
thunder showers, so we had to cancel on the second day. However, the
footage we gathered on Saturday was so much satisfying I was not
disappointed by the week end we had.
Filming at night is also very
challenging, fortunately director of photography Jan Pivon knows
well how to arrange things and set up a very nice night lighting
setup. I uploaded some video captures of the set. Everyone was so
busy was don't really have behind-the-scenes photos of that day...

September 6th, 2004
Labor day week end! What an appropriate name! We had a three-days
filming session, and most of the principal photography has been done
during that period of time. A giant leap in the film's production! I
want to thank, publicly, all the cast and crew who gave their time
to this project. Many of them could have decided to stay with their
families, and go out for some well-deserved vacations, yet all
agreed to stick around and help in the production of the film.
Kudos, guys, you ROCK!!
So many shots are done, more than half
of all the principal location photography. I am editing the film as
it is being filmed, so it is very easy to re-do some shoots when I
realize this or that shot does not really line up well on the film's
timeline. Very effective and convenient way to get work done!
We also have on location Mr. Keith Braithwaite, who is producing on
his end a featurette and a complete behind-the-scene segment on the
making of the film. You'll see EVERYTHING in his film, which is
aimed to be part of the DVD release of course. Some grotesque shots,
some mess we made around the place, all the takes we made after
having Lindsay soaked in blood... "Cut! no good! Get cleaned and
let's roll again!" Who said making film was an easy task??

September 13th, 2004
Yet another busy week end! we came close to cancel Sunday, as we had
a bit of the hurricane's effect right here too, but fortunately,
weather love independent film makers, and in the early afternoon
showers and clouds were behind and we could get going and nail down
some more shots. It ain't easy to book up to 14 people at a time,
and drag them at an average 60 minutes drive from their home, so
canceling at the last minute is never funny. So far we've been
extremely lucky about this, knock some wood it continues that way!!!
As soon as location filming is done, we'll have only studio shots to
do, so it will be much more easy to handle.
At this time now, we're only one
week end away from location filming's completion!! Next week end
we should be done and have gathered over 95% of the needed footage
for the film's final edit. We're almost there, bear with me folks!!

September 20th, 2004
We made it! The week end of 18th and 19th of September
was the last week end of location filming, so all the scenes taking
place in the woods are nailed down for good.
This was quite a busy week end, as we
had no room to play, and EVERYTHING had to be over by Sunday the
19th. After that we could hardly get to the place for filming, not
to mention the place is getting rather cold, so we had no choice to
complete all the location photography. Mission accomplished. The
cast and crew were simply amazing, and actors delivered an
outstanding performance.
As of today, I will be capturing the
footage and make a rough cut of these segments, and from there we
will be filming in studio the shots aimed at stitching all the sets
together. Additional blue screen shots are also scheduled in a
couple of weeks, but we want to be done with the outdoor ones first.
There are a few scenes to nail down around Montreal, and on October
1st, there's also a session scheduled with cult actress Suzi
Lorraine.
By the meantime, I should be able to
put together a neat movie trailer for Purple Glow...! Stick around!

More shots done! This afternoon, DP Jan Pivon and myself have nailed
down additional footage for the feature, starring this time stunning
Suzi Lorraine who makes a special guest appearance in the film.
Veeeery nice and sensuous shots as Suzi appears in the film as
Darin's fantasy girl. Every time the Darin talks to his friends
about the fantasy girl of his dreams, we have lovely Suzi to
impersonate that character...!!
The shots and sets went very smooth,
it's always so much fin and such a privilege to work with Suzi. I
should soon be uploading a couple of video captures of this session,
stay tuned!
Other than that, the final cut of the
film is coming along nicely, yet we still have small shots to do
here and there, stuff to stitch key scenes altogether. More filming
session should be booked for next week.

We got messy again! Tonight we've been filming additional shots,
this time again with Lindsay Brown and Marc Durocher. Some
very, very sexy shots where a sweet girl is rocking near the dead
body of a 'lucky' guy who got killed by her. Linzi is starting to
enjoy blood, I can confirm that. Oh mi gawd, I created a monster!!

I went back on location, where we filmed most of the action taking
place in Purple Glow, to gather some landscape shots, establishing
shots and highway sequences. God is it cold now or what?!
Fortunately we no longer need to call in all the cast and crew and
drive back to that neighborhood, the remaining shots will be done
'studio'.

Today I received the main title, the song composed and performed by
Cheaper Than Therapy, written especially for Purple Glow!! The guys
went in the studio two weeks ago to record the main title, and I
just received the fresh master from their label BullsEye Records.
What a solid piece of rock!! It's truly a killer track, Cheaper Than
Therapy rules! I've listened to it all day today, non-stop loop, and
now I just can't wait to line it up on the timeline!

Last night we've went thru another studio filming session.
Everything went well, again! I want to thank all the people working
with me on this project, the guys truly deliver, sound, DP, support,
not to mention the casting obviously.
So now we are only one filming day
away from completion! Stick around, as I will be posting fresh video
captures very soon. The TRAILER IS ALSO COMING! I have
edited a kewl 90 seconds piece, and I am now working on the sound
design of this clip. It should be posted in the next days... Stick
around!!!

Here it is, finally!! I just uploaded the official trailer, so it's
now up to you to download and enjoy! That is a 90 seconds piece that
highlights some intense moments of the film, but I warn you
right now, it's not too telling so when the film will be out, there
will still be surprises. I dunno for you, but I personally hate
it when you look at a trailer, and then you realize when
watching the whole film that you've seen everything that matters in
the 90 seconds preview...!

November 29th, 2004
OK folks, it's almost over! Or should I say it IS over for me, as
the final cut of Purple Glow is done! That's right, the film is
now 100% assembled, and has been forwarded to talented score
composer / sound designer Jay Belton!
By the meantime, I will be sitting
with Keith Braithwaite and edit a neat making-of featurette. Keith
gathered some 16 hours of behind-the-scene footage, we will be
browsing these tapes, and extract memorable moments during the
filming of Purple Glow. There has also been some interviews
conducted with the cast and crew members, so this segment should
make a very entertaining and interesting extra for the DVD. More
on this soon!!

I admit I haven't much updated this site lately, thing is that there
is no real news as the project is in the hands of Jay Belton, who is
working hard to build a killer score for the movie.
So far we're still on schedule for
releasing the film in April and begin shipping the DVD!
Stay tuned!! |

Time sure flies!! We ran into some unexpected problems in audio
synching, but it's now over.
While I am typing these lines, the DVD is getting done and I am
making some compression tests to achieve a great MPEG quality. Next
step is to finalize for good the behind-the-scene segment by Keith
Braithwaite, dump on disc and we're in business! Stick around for
the official release date announcement!
I also submitted the film to the renown FanTasia film
festival. Knock some wood the film is selected to premiere in this
huge horror movies festival!!

A couple of days ago, we premiere Purple Glow at
FanTasia, and the show was a blast! We had an impressive
attendance, considering the presentation was taking place on a
Wednesday, in the late afternoon. We nearly filled the 325 seats
theater, and the audience really enjoyed the movie. Cast and crew,
we all worked hard on this project, so it's always a relief when we
see that other people than us enjoy the final product! Thank
you so much guys!! Keep it coming!!
A couple of posts above, we talked of
a April DVD release (...) Well we're a bit behind schedule as
you can see, but we're about to go public with the disc so look
forward to the official DVD release of Purple Glow, now planned for
mid-August or so. We already accept pre-orders for the disc, too!
